Doors 04:48
I drove through the night Was pulled by some fire Where I go, you cannot follow Touch is a darkness That tingles with colour To feast at a table In blankets of shadows Held in the twilight By fingers of ghosts Spoken in whispers I let out the secret I hold close
2.
Is it night or is it day? You asleep or you awake? You can open up your eyes You can be the better for it when you go And maybe we will find each other Do you know? Do you feel? All the things that left When I found you
3.
Give him justice and I’ll pay you kind Put it in my bucket and I’ll drink the wine If it’s all you got Cause I make my money from stealing dimes Put a coat of copper in the coal mine If it’s all that you want But I’ve got something else to share with you You love your daughter like you got a son Cause she ain't that pretty after all is said and done to her She walks outside under lighter fuel Put the boys back home in the swimming pool She’s got sparks, you know She’s got fire below And she’s got something else to share with you We are becoming the shawl of night around your head You’re a dead man now

Acacia 04:49
I don't want you to go I don't want you to stay I don't want you to sleep it off It's hard enough to find someone to blame I can take the cold I can take the rain Oh, it's the demon sun under my skin That malevolent influx of memory pangs I don't see much of day I don't sleep much at night I don't care if the moon's on my side It's a wicked ascension of waterless tide It's lukewarm on the surface But deep down it's cold as ice It's cold as ice

Home 05:08
Light shone on the hills We made it, I don't know how Maybe the stars we wished upon Have finally come through I'm not sure what's ahead Through the mist, through the darkness But when the sand warms your cheekbones You'll be glad what's past is past Home is in your eyes You can be stronger in its light Wake up from your sleep You can be stronger when you're free I'm afraid These strangers' ships keep moving in my nightmares Maybe the olive trees will shade us from the piercing glare But when the bullets poured into your body Like the horns of bulls and armies Daughter, I held you close and looked at the sky I don't know why, I don't know why, I don't know why Breathe, keep breathing Come on lay your head It's okay, you know it

MOMA 02:56
I’m taking you to New York It’s a place that I’ve never been It’s a place that you’ve never been It’s a place no one has ever been to I'm taking you to New York I’m keeping my promises I'm making a new house Going to find you again
7.
You said to me that we'd leave here forever But I can't become what I need to have been You said to me that this town was bad weather But I've never been so almost contented We were never young We were just hawkeyes on the rising sun You said to me that we'd leave here forever But I'm not as sure as I once was You spoke to me with a voice unrelenting But all that is left in you now is a whisper We were never free We were just breakers on the raging sea
8.
And I fell from the mountains Into the ocean Is it now or is it then? And maybe I'll find you Under the water Is it now or is it then? Oh, spread your wings Let the wind blow where the wind blows And I will follow Even though I don't understand It's not okay To be found You've been there before
9.
We've got a former life You couldn't believe it if you tried When I spoke it out One of you stood still, the other cried I guess it all makes sense now Oh, the curse of the light I guess it all makes sense now We were right Once, the heavens fell On our backs and left their lashes Still, we shook the bruises off Now we run and we are stronger
10.
I've been told it will come Like a thief in the night Some will cry out in joy and some with fright And the grass will give way As the bodies emerge Air will pour in their lungs Or so I've heard Please, don't leave me in the earth Light will cover our face Leaving each thing revealed I'd be lying to say I wasn't scared And if you see it on me On my hands or my head You can wash me with fire till flame is fed Please, don't leave me here instead

Bantamweight 05:56
They take you all the way downtown Show you right where to begin Through the streets and empty buildings You break the locks but you still can't get in They leave you out to fight the elements From your back, you can count the stars Slowly they will all expand and join Unfolding forces in the darkness Making one relentless, uncontainable, dramatic conclusion To everything you've known so far And if you call me, I will answer you on the first ring Everything you bring, I will honour Every house that crumbles, I will rebuild When the light is violent and imposing I will be as dark as the silent hour when I first told you What I'm still discovering When the calm is poisonous and lonely I will be as wild as the raging waters that first bore you To the shore of my release

Haisha 05:30
Take me to an old northern town Where the night does not progress after the sun is down Is there anybody here at all? Is there anybody hurt cause I can’t see too well Give me that flame, it’s an old redemption You can find the truth, but it screams pretension Did anybody hear that sigh? Is there anybody else still terrified? Watch me talk a tired victim down Do you see the architect in his old home town? Is there anybody who can tell? Is there anybody off of that windowsill? Give me those prayers, they’re an old protection Lord, deliver me from my own intentions Is there somebody at my door? Is there somebody there, what are you here for? Soft wind blowing through the city Bringing you closer to me in the young night For the first time Floating through the new songs Beating on an old drum Rhythm skips across the river Small birds singing in the tall ferns Oh, it's a good earth to walk upon When the snow is gone Looking at your face now Shining like the copper bells Of the church across the river

about

"Touch is a Darkness" is a collaboration between Suhail Stephen and Bryn Rieger (europeanvacation.bandcamp.com) and is the result of years of friendship and musical partnership. The album is a sonic document of heartbreak, contemplation, and learned optimism, filtered through lush synthesizers and disintegrating beats.

Sometime in early 2013, we began meeting every Friday afternoon to write and record. We each brought six ideas and then refined and arranged them into songs together. The resulting twelve-song album was recorded and mostly mixed in short order, only for it to lay dormant for several years till the spring of 2020 when it was completed.
